HIC for FAIR Helmholtz International Center for FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research)

What is mass? Where does matter come from? How did the elements form in the Universe? By developing accelerators and detectors and refining theories, scientists at the LOEWE centre HIC for FAIR are preparing experiments for the particle accelerator known as FAIR – Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research. This international research site will go into operation in Darmstadt by 2018. Valuable “spin-offs” of the fundamental research done for FAIR are high-tech applications used, for example, in innovative energy-efficient computing systems and in tumour therapy. A prime example is the high-performance computer LOEWE CSC located in Frankfurt-Höchst, one of the fastest and most energy-efficient computers in Europe.
