ADAPT Adaptation to drought and extremes: The surface-soil-groundwater buffer under climate stress

Long periods of drought during the growing season, caused by climate change, are posing an increasing challenge to agriculture and the water supply. At the same time, intense rainfall causes water to run off quickly, rather than allowing it to be stored in the soil or groundwater. 

The Research Cluster ADAPT investigates ways to better interconnect surface, soil and groundwater reservoirs to extend the residence time of water in the landscape and enhance storage capacity. The project also explores the potential of using treated wastewater for irrigation and the impact of introducing micropollutants from its use on natural biogeochemical cycling in the subsurface, as well as the ability of soils and sediments in groundwater to naturally remove pollutants. 

ADAPT combines experiments aimed at advancing water treatment with computer modelling to evaluate the potential benefits and risks of using treated wastewater for irrigation in the context of extreme climate conditions.
