LOEWE Research Cluster USAG Mathematics of Billard Tables

The LOEWE research cluster "USAG - Uniformized Structures in Arithmetic and Geometry" explores the question of how complicated geometric spaces can be described by simpler spaces. The concept of uniformization, which goes back to the work of the famous mathematicians Bernhard Riemann and Felix Klein from the 19th century, provides an approach for this. It allows replacing a complex geometric space with a much simpler one, without changing the local structure. Replacing complicated mathematical objects with much simpler ones is important for processes that depend on many factors, such as vehicle crash tests or virus propagation models.

LOEWE USAG riddle:

How many times does the DVD logo bounce off the sides before ending up in a corner?

Have fun & good luck with the solution!
