The international symposium “Diffusible Signals in Infection Medicine and Research” of the LOEWE research area “Diffusible Signals” took place in Marburg from June 17 to 18, bringing together experts from a wide range of disciplines. The focus was on the role of diffusible signals in microbial communities and in the human body in infections - from molecular mechanisms to clinical applications.

Renowned scientists presented the latest findings from microbiome research, systems biology, bioinformatics and clinical infection medicine. The topics ranged from drug metabolism by the microbiome, synthetic microbial communities and bacterial biofilms to personalized immunotherapy for sepsis and the role of the microbiota in pneumonia. The bioenergetic basis of infectious diseases was also highlighted.

It was particularly inspiring to see how basic research and clinical application are linked in order to develop new approaches for diagnostics, therapy and prevention. The interdisciplinary exchange impressively demonstrated how the combination of different research approaches can create new perspectives for personalized infection medicine.
