LOEWE top professor Susanne Herold becomes a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina

Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Susanne Herold, renowned lung researcher and infectiologist at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), has been accepted as a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The Leopoldina is the oldest scientific and medical learned society in Germany and advises politicians and the public on scientific issues. Admission to this academy is considered a high honor and recognition for outstanding scientific achievements.

Prof. Herold holds a top LOEWE professorship at JLU funded by the state of Hesse and is one of the two spokespersons of the Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI) Cluster of Excellence, which successfully conducts research projects on heart and lung diseases in close cooperation with Goethe University Frankfurt and the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research Bad Nauheim.

Her research focuses on acute lung failure and infectious diseases of the lung. Prof. Herold has made significant contributions to research into virus-related lung damage and has distinguished herself as one of the world's leading experts during the coronavirus pandemic. Her work is highly regarded both nationally and internationally

Her election to the Leopoldina not only recognizes her scientific excellence, but also underlines the importance of her LOEWE-funded research activities for medical science and healthcare. Prof. Herold combines excellent research with interdisciplinary networking and social commitment.
