On September 7, 2026, the selection symposium for the 2027 Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Early Career Award will take place at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) in Frankfurt am Main, hosted by Maria Vehreschild (LOEWE-ACLF-I), Chair of the Selection Committee and a representative of Goethe University Frankfurt.

As part of the selection process, six outstanding early-career scientists have been nominated as candidates for the prize. Among them is Pia Susan Zeiner, a project leader at LOEWE-FCI and a neurologist, who will present her research on tumor immunology at the symposium. Her presentation focuses on how a better understanding of the immunology of brain tumors can contribute to the further development of therapeutic strategies for CNS metastases.

The symposium will open with a welcome address and an introductory lecture by Prof. Maria Vehreschild, Deputy Spokesperson of the former LOEWE Research Cluster ACLF-I and Head of the Infectious Diseases Division at Medical Clinic II, University Hospital Frankfurt.

Following this, Pia Zeiner and the five other selected early-career scientists will present their work in 20-minute talks, each followed by a discussion.

Finally, after thorough deliberation, an eight-member selection committee will propose a recipient for the prize – which carries a cash award of 60,000 euros – to the Scientific Council of the Paul Ehrlich Foundation. The prize is funded by the Federal Ministry of Health as well as by earmarked donations from companies, foundations, and sponsors.
