With the appointment of Prof. Dr. Martin Becker, the University of Marburg has gained a proven expert in the modeling of human behaviour, the analysis of complex environmental data (e.g. air quality) and biomedical research, particularly in the fields of multi-omics and single-cell biology. Becker plans to work closely with the LOEWE focus areas DYNAMIC, HABITAT and iCANx as well as interdisciplinary programs such as “The Adaptive Mind” and “Microbes-for-Climate”.

Together with the likewise newly appointed professors Ralph Ewerth (focus: multimodal AI and machine learning) and Christin Seifert (explainable AI), Becker holds one of the three Marburg professorships within the state-wide AI center hessian.AI. The professorships are anchored in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and pursue an interdisciplinary approach to developing AI solutions for socially relevant topics such as medicine, the environment and education.

Becker's research focuses on intelligent decision support systems that open up new ways of dealing with complex data through the integration of domain knowledge. He thus makes a key contribution to the further development of the AI strategy of the state of Hesse and to the international visibility of Marburg as an AI location.
