LOEWE-Start-Professorship for perception researcher Dr. Katharina Dobs at Justus Liebig University Giessen
Katharina Dobs has been awarded a LOEWE Start Professorship at JLU Giessen for her research in applied computer science with a focus on cognitive systems. The state of Hesse is providing around 1.9 million euros over six years. This will also support the research network “The Adaptive Mind” in the Excellence Strategy competition.
“We recognize friends in a crowd or select groceries when shopping: Our brain has to quickly visually recognize and interpret complex scenes for these natural abilities. Dr. Katharina Dobs is researching how it does this. As an internationally renowned expert in visual perception mechanisms in biological and artificial systems, she enriches the Hessian research landscape. Her work in the proposed Cluster of Excellence 'The Adaptive Mind' strengthens us decisively in the competition of the Excellence Strategy,” says Science Minister Timon Gremmels.
“Dr. Katharina Dobs researches the mechanisms of human visual perception. With her interdisciplinary research work on functional specialization, the psychologist and computer scientist provides valuable insights into the organization of the human brain,” says Prof. Dr. Katharina Lorenz, President of Justus Liebig University Giessen. “We are delighted that we were able to appoint this dedicated researcher to JLU with the support of the State of Hesse and the LOEWE Start Professorship. With her innovative research approaches, she enriches the work in the proposed Cluster of Excellence 'The Adaptive Mind'.”
Dr. Dobs investigates how the human brain processes visual information, for example in facial recognition. Her research combines imaging techniques with artificial intelligence (AI) to decode neuronal processes and understand the adaptability of the visual system. The findings should not only expand our knowledge of human perception, but also enable more powerful AI models.
