LOEWE-emergenCity supports the development and establishment of the first national center for digital resilience in disasters in Darmstadt with its expertise – Letter of intent signed

Protecting infrastructures such as telecommunications and information technology is becoming increasingly important in order to remain operational in the event of a crisis.
For this reason, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser, together with Hesse's Digital Minister Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus, signed a letter of intent to establish the first national center for digital resilience in disasters. The goal of the center is to sustainably strengthen the resilience of digital infrastructures to crises and disasters. Construction is scheduled to begin in the coming months. The LOEWE Center emergenCity has been conducting research on resilience for digital cities since 2020 and will now support the establishment of this national center.
Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser: "We must make Germany more resilient and crisis-proof. This is absolutely necessary in view of natural disasters, but also cyberattacks and other hybrid threats. The Center for Digital Resilience can bring together operators of critical infrastructure, public authorities, businesses, and academia. It can pool the expertise of all key players and strengthen the crisis management. I very much welcome the fact that Hesse is establishing this important center. [...]."
Hesse's Digital Minister Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus: "The center is a strategic investment in the security, innovative power, and economic strength of our state. It is essential to making Germany resilient to the challenges of the 21st century and securing its leading role in the digital world. With our center, we are creating an exchange platform to remain operational even in the event of disruptions or failures of ICT systems."
The Hessian Minister for Science and Research, Arts and Culture, Timon Gremmels, also emphasized the importance: "I am pleased that the LOEWE Center emergenCity can support the development of the National Center for Digital Resilience in Disasters. Like ATHENE, it is an excellent example of Hesse's research funding investing in future-relevant topics. The center can make a decisive contribution to making digital infrastructures more secure and better preparing our state for future crises."
In the long term, the center will evolve into a national platform with international appeal. With projects like emergenCITY and the already established Athene Center for Applied Cybersecurity, Hesse is providing significant impetus for digital resilience and the protection of critical infrastructures.
