Carlos Hermosilla, Professor at the LOEWE Centre DRUID, awarded honorary professorship by Chilean university for his research in parasitology
The LOEWE-DRUID professor and Giessen-based parasitologist Prof. Dr. Dr. habil. Carlos Hermosilla was awarded an honorary professorship by the Universidad de la Frontera (UFRO) in Temuco (Chile) for his research on the interaction between the human immune system and specific parasite species. The honour was awarded in particular in recognition of his achievements in research on the role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation in human reproductive medicine and the cooperation between Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the UFRO. Prof. Hermosilla also works closely with his Chilean colleagues at the Centre of Translation Medicine - Scientific and Technological Biosource Nucleus (CEMT-BIOREN) at the Faculty of Medicine of the Chilean university.
His research and teaching activities focus on the areas of non-adaptive immune response (NETs/METs formation) against intracellular/extracellular parasite species, their signalling pathways, metabolic pathways and receptors, zoonotic-relevant parasitoses in marine and terrestrial mammals and parasitoses in neobiota. Prof. Hermosilla also focuses on poverty-related and neglected diseases (PRNDs) as part of the global health concept - with a particular focus on countries in Latin America and Africa.
He has been working particularly closely with the UFRO since 2015. The focus is on the release of NETs in the female and male reproductive tract and their effect on fertility. This collaboration has been funded several times by programmes of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Chilean FONDECYT (equivalent to the DFG) and has resulted in numerous joint publications.
The UFRO and the JLU have had professional links since the end of 2015. The lively exchange of students and researchers with stays abroad of several weeks each is a feature of this international cooperation and is to be expanded even more intensively in the future.
