LOEWE 2014 The attraction of excellence: Darmstadt is the number one address for IT security

Today, the LOEWE Center for Advanced Security Research Darmstadt (CASED), which has been bringing together the expertise in the field of IT security at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology SIT and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences since 2008, is home to several large research initiatives. This is where the key research cluster Software Innovations for Digital Enterprises, which has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since 2009, and the DFG’s Reliably Secure Software Systems (RS³) programme are based. In a partnership arrangement with the Fraunhofer Institute SIT and the Technische Universität Darmstadt, CASED has been lead-managing the BMBF-funded Competence Centre for Cyber Security, the European Centre for Security and Privacy by Design (EC SPRIDE), since 2011 – with annual funding of €2 million and the prospect of becoming a permanent establishment. 2011 also saw the launch of the TU Darmstadt/Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Secure Computing (ICRI-SC), the only Intel research centre in Europe in the field of IT security. In the autumn of 2014 SIT will move into the new Fraunhofer building, which has space for sizeable expansion.

»CASED has very quickly become a crystallisation point for the establishment of other research initiatives and institutes working in the field of IT security. Darmstadt is today one of the top addresses in that sphere in Germany and Europe.«
