In 2009 six German centres for health research were established with central government funding – four of which have LOEWE research initiatives as partners. Their goal is to bring together research on combating major widespread diseases and to speed up the transfer to practical application. The LOEWE Universities of Giessen and Marburg Lung Center (UGMLC), which brings together pulmonary research at the universities in Giessen and Marburg and at the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim, was the starting point in 2010 for the establishment of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), which it lead-manages. UGMLC is also a stakeholder in the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF). Researchers at the LOEWE centre for Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) in Frankfurt are lead-managing the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) and represent the RhineMain partner location. With substantial input from the LOEWE research cluster Oncogenic Signaling Frankfurt (OSF), the location Frankfurt/Mainz has become successfully established as one of the seven partners in the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research (DKTK).
